Roof Refurbishment

Hawkins Roofing Ltd were awarded the contract by Petchey Holdings to refurbish the roof of the large grain storage facility at Cherwell Valley Silos near Banbury. The project required the installation of all working-at-height safety systems, including scaffolding, loading platforms, safety netting, debris lining and statically charged film on the underside of the roof to ensure a safe and controlled work environment. Once the safety systems were in place, Hawkins Roofing carefully removed the existing asbestos roof in strictly controlled conditions and prepared the structure for the new roofing system.

Around 2,500 m² of Kingspan KS1000 RW insulated composite roof panels were installed, providing rapid installation, high thermal performance, and immediate weather protection. The KS1000 RW system provides an insulated, wind and water-tight finish and is engineered for pitched roof applications of 4° or more, with optional factory-applied lap seals to ensure airtightness and compliance with Kingspan’s installation specifications. The installation included all associated fixings, seals and flashings in accordance with Kingspan’s recommended guidelines, ensuring long-term durability and thermal performance.

Hawkins Roofing implemented a phased strip-and-replace method, so the building remained fully watertight throughout. Each section of asbestos roof was removed and re-sheeted immediately, allowing operations inside the grain store to continue uninterrupted. Close coordination between stripping and installation teams maintained safety, environmental controls, and continuous weather protection.

The project was completed on time, on budget, and to the satisfaction of both the client and the site tenants.
